Title: Music
Post by: King on October 18, 2001, 05:14:41 PM
I'd like to see some really subtle background music... some creatively inspiring music. I realize that CL probably doesn't have any musicians onboard (yet), and they probably don't want to license someone else's tunes, but it'd be nice to see.

I realize that I can play my own MP3s or whatever in the background, but I don't think that listening to stuff like rock or hip-hop really helps to get the creativity flowing :)

Call me crazy, but I'd actually like to see some mediocre, SUBTLE music in there!

The Sims is a good example of how to effectively use music to influence creativity. The piano solos that play while you are designing your house ad just the right background noise to an otherwise quiet task.

Some simple public domain midi music would be easy to implement. You know, just something lite and simple on a low volume.

Chris de Burgh: "Spanish train"
"For it is said that the souls of the dead
fill that train, ten thousand deep"
"That train is dead on time, many souls are on the line"

Not exactly my favourite music, but the text is to the point...

It would have to be MIDI music. part of the appeal of this game is its size. An mp3 would double if not more the size of the game. However, I also think some music might be nice, IF there was an option to switch it off.

I'm actually listening to some music right now from Age Of Empires II called "xcredits" in my c:, it's really good and kind of quiet :)

Just grab a few CDs of your supermarket bargain table - low-quality pop suitable for background right there. CDs with cover shots that have softener applied to them serve best. When you're done playing Pontifex, you can always reuse them as ninja disks...

the music in the backround of the monopoly computer game is really good if you want to try it.

Music would be fun. What style do you think would be suitable for a sim game like pontifex?

Sim's building music was good... Hotel Lounge-style piano solos are extremely good for creating atmosphere.

I play MP3s as I play, but a nice train-type midi would be nice.. :)

I've had "Spank the Monkey" playing in the background for a while now. Addictive little game. It's a pretty simple loop, drums, a violin, and something I can only disscribe as bubbles.

I'm just not sure I see the need to ADD music to P*. I like the ability to load up my favorite mp3's or CD's. Sometimes I like to build bridges to the NiN soundtrack on Quake, other times it will be the Brady Bunch Theme song. It isn't as if the music will alter the mood of a level.

Usually a quiet environment helps produce creative ideas, creative solutions to problems. More to the point, building a bridge accurately wil not be harmed by music because your left brain half builds the bridge and your right brain half listens to music, but doing a creative re-design (and "seeing" one) needs both of your brain's halves.

Perhaps some quiet new-age instrumental stuff (sounds of the earth etc.) would help, but I think it is highly personal which music (if any) makes you creative.

You might as well ask which food makes you build better bridges (and I know what falkon will reply to that ;-).

Has anyone played Transport Tycoon and/or the Deluxe version?  The music from it would be perfect as it deals with railroads and, yes, BRIDGES!  This website (http://www.transporttycoon.co.uk/) has all the MIDI files from Transport Tycoon for download.  They actually have the game too...

Yeah, eat your bridges, that'll make them sturdy (actually, if you could eat every bar that you remove while reconstructing, this would solve a lot of the world's hunger problems...)

And falkon, nice try, but I know you *thought* to answer something else and would have if I hadn't dared you :-)
