Title: Changes to the Level Editor
Post by: on November 07, 2001, 01:05:47 AM
An undo button!!!

I'd personally also prefer it to default to to width rather than land (I've mentioned this elsewhere)

3D editing I find rather unwieldy...without the ability to rotate the level, I don't know how you'd fix this though. Maybe an overhead view, with a grid on the ground (like in The Sims etc.) as an alternative option?

Oh, and it'd be nice to be able to change the level size during editing rather than just at the start. :)

Pressing the 'F' key will move back.  It's right below the 'R' key, so it makes intuitive sense to use, even though (F)orward and ®everse seem more logical at first.  :)

Right-click/drag should move the grid forward and backward as an alternative to r/f

This might make it a lot easier to make diagonal beams

I always think of it as going to stage Rear and stage Front...

Or we could just use the mouse wheel to switch planes(additionally, if present).

thanks klei That will be a big help.

I don't find pressing R and F to be all that hard though. I don't see any reason to change.

the mouse whell would be cool but the sensors arent very good so you might end up jumping back and fourth or skiping a layer.

I reckon the land tool needs a 'snap to grid' function.

I just dread making levels with differing land heights because if you decide you suddenly want to remove a hill and make it flat again, you can't (properly)

what does everyone else think

(why do I get the feeling someone is gonna tell me its already available???)

What kind of mouse do you have?  The wheels on mice I've used are very precise; you move it one 'unit', and it moves once.  I think I like the wheel idea, you could really fly through the complicated parts of design that way.

"(why do I get the feeling someone is gonna tell me its already available???)"

Because the level editor manual says
"Holding down Ctrl key while editing the landscape will snap the height of the landscape to the grid."

Though I must admit, it took a friend to tell me this before I used it, too. :)

Maybe we need a FAQ item: What things are in the manual that you can't figure out by just using the game?

I agree with Entroper.
Also, the water should be more see-through-able (Less opaque), including while testing.

My mouse wheel is okay but I have used many that will sometimes jump by two and sometimes not do anything. This would help the editing even if you had mouse trouble though.

Andy24: This does not apply if your mouse did that from the beginning: that means it's just a crappy mouse(no offense)
That mouse problem is generally created by little pieces of dust crawling down through your mouse wheel's hole (the mouse only has protection from the bottom).
You really should get your mouse cleaned because if you wait, your mouse might stop working for ever (like my Microsoft mouse did)

Add a keyboard shortcut for 'back' - there already is one for 'forward' - it's a real pain linking nodes at different z levels.
