Title: How about "Skyscraper Builder"
Post by: pasqualz on October 11, 2001, 03:18:27 PM
I sent this idea directly to the chronic logic in an Email a few days ago, but i thought others might want to hear about it and help improve on or change the idea. My idea is "SKYSCRAPER BUILDER." You start out with a foundation and you have to build a steel and/or concrete skeleton for the building, then add on an outer wall. I don't think you'd worry much about the insides( Elevators, office space, people etc.), as that was already covered in Sim Tower. Once the building is built, it is exposed to wind, eqrthquakes and other forces to see if it can stand. Maybe there could be a variation on this game, where you need to demolish the building using strategically placed explosives to get it to fall the right way!!!! Imagine designing a building and then challenging other users to demolish it in a certain way!!!

But that's the cool thing, given the freedon to build any way you want, you could make any kind of structure you want, an inverted pear shaped thing, a pyramid, a couple of buildings interconnected at the top, all the stuff you'd never see built in real life. Taking it to the extreme, you could build stuff like flying cities like in Star Wars, given a few floating anchors, Pontifex Style, or maybe stuff like Venice, where there are bridges all over the place and the houses sit on anchors that are at the bottom of the water.

i think the idea has huge potential. but it would have to be a bit better looking than Pontifex, no offence ChronicLogic :)

Some nice detailed 3d Landscapes, 3d water with waves and reflections, and all kinds of textures for the building, like glass, metal, granite, marble.. stuff a GeForce 3 could take advantage of, you get the idea. All of these optional of course, for crappy computers.

I would love to go nuts on a large landscape with rivers, etc, and build a whole city, from skyscrapers, to bridges, to classic buildings, or greek temples, baroque cathedrals.. wow, imagine being given the island in Paris with the Notre Dame, and being able to build it, and all the bridges that connect the island to the city

Arrrggg, i really wanna play it now :)

Be careful, this topic is a bit dangerous these days...

You could make it more challenging by forcing builders to make increeasingly taller and skinnier buildings. The skinnier a building is, the more susceptible it is to collapse! You could also require builders to build around obstacles. . .

I agree that this topic is sensitive right now, but it's just harmless fun...  It's like making a building out of legos and then wrecking it just to build it again!  Also, anybody remember building blasters?  :)

I'd love to play a game like this! I just love to see if my construction will stand or not! Couldn't the crane idea be a part of the "Skyscrape Bulider" game!?

That's a really cool idea, i'd love to play it!!

Imagine being given different kinds of foundations, something strange like a two booted buiding, like an arch, or stadium domes, and towers like the CN tower in Toronto. And i assume it wouldn't be too hard to adapt the Pontifex engine to a game like that, the same basic principles of metal links would apply.
Or make the game so general that you can even build a space shuttle launch pad and see if it can stand launch stresses :)

And the demolition idea is even better! I'd be cool to have buildings around the one being destroyed that can only take a certain amount of damage (like the links in Pontifex), so you have to be careful how you set up the explosion.

How about a competitive game, where each player builds a demolition crane and tries to knock the other one over? ;-)

That would be a really cool game, but Chronic Login should be careful about making anything like that now...

I like this idea, its like simcity except instead of a politician you are an engineer, a much more lovable character.  As far as the NYC sensitivity issue, its a cliche but it's true "No publicity is bad publicity".

I understand that some people would be sensitive to this type of game, ####, I live in New York and was stuck in my car trying to get into NYC when the attacks happened. Luckily, nobody in my family was affected, but I do know several peole who lost loved ones. Having said that, I believe that most people would still want to play this game. Here's another point, how many people in the world even know that Pontifex or Chronic Logic even exist? Sorry CL, I don't mean to put your small, but great company down, but I don't really think that most people would notice. And from a slightly weird point of view, you may end up getting lots of publicity for your company, which may sound bad, but as the saying goes, "There's no such thing as bad publicity." If you guys at CL are on the fence about whether to pursue "Skyscraper Builder," I say GO FOR IT!

I had the exact same idea. It would be impressive and fun. Another thing I think they should add to any other games or versions is the arch. It would be interesting to make an arch bridge/building.

Yes we are trying to resurrect the forum, get it back to its old glory :)  We will keep the games coming, thanks for your support.  We could make a new type of builder game one of these days so keep checking in with us, you never know.

This is the best idea so far, but it needs much thinking and designing. Objective? Make x floors/meters high building, which can withstand an earthquake of y magnitude or a hurricane or something? It seems a bit vague objective for me, but it could work.

But how many ways do you have for building skyscrapers? They all seem like blocks of different heights to me. Not very imaginative.
