Title: Who has beat Gish?
Post by: zanzer7 on May 25, 2004, 05:35:10 PM
I bought Gish yesterday, and I got through it today...
A bit short, but an overall great game... I'll do it again one of these days...
Oh yeah, also did all "Collection Thingie" levels... I was wondering, is "Playroom used for anything more than just... jumping around?

Whatever, I have a question for ChronicLogic:
Are we allowed to make mods for Gish?
And maps too, if that's even possible without a level editor

Thanks in advance

The "play room" is just for that, playing around.  As for mods for Gish that is still up in the air with the level editor.  Its possible that it will be released but at this point in time it is not ready for release.

I went through again to try to get the other ending (the bad one). For a terrible moment I thought my work was for nothing when the I accidentally nudged the cage and it got jammed. I had to jump up and down on top of it to make sure I got the ending I wanted. Why do I feel less than heroic?

It took me abut 5-6 days. Of course, I currently don't have much time to play and see how some make it faster. Length was okay for me plus there's some replay value in the game. Of course, in a case like this there never can be such a thing as 'enough' levels since Gish isn't the type of game one would get tired off. (Whereas an RPG, for instance, can drag on for too long.)

I've beat it now.  The scariest part is if you've met girls like that.

Is the other ending any funner?

And now I can begin finding all the secrets and collecting all the amber...

Everything you mention is simply physics. There are some strange things that can happen, but you didn't mention any of them.

Speaking of enough levels, has anyone found the secret levels yet? I've been looking all over for them, but it's no good. Can't find them.

The last level of the Church episode before the bosses is what held me back. Of course I found the freaking extra life at the start of the level on the very same life that I got past it. =p

The first secret level is in the sewers, I found it by accident.
I'm still on Rapture, but i have had alot of work to do, so i've pretty much been playing in my lunch break (not good for productivity ??? ) I got stuck on the plains of hehenna for a while... but shouldnt it go Egypt, Hell, Heaven?
Anyway, could you keep us posted on the level editor? I think thats what were all hanging out for ;)

I read somewhere that when you beat the game and get your name in yellow it opens up level skip, is this true? and if so how? :)

I beat Gish (that is, defeated the final boss) the day after I got it (I got stuck on the Planes for a while), perhaps 10-15 hours play time. I had a lot of practice maneuvering Gish playing the demo, so I didn't need to get used to his unique way of moving around. I then beat it again to get a better ending, which took only 2 or 3 hours.

Still, it took me many many lives, and I don't think I've gotten any of the secret levels or much of that fun stuff. I'm going to play through again and see if I can beat the game without killing Hera, as a good half of the ending deals with her. The problem will probably be stopping her from following me and thus accidently falling into the lava.

As many other people have said, a level editor would be very, very cool. And, the collision detection does seem a little bit off; perhaps Gish is simply too relaxed (that is, not very tense :;):), so he goes flat too easily. I was pretty disappointed at how easily Hera could squish me just by running into me while heavy (you can of course counter by going heavy yourself). It never seemed to do less than 100 hp damage.

I was a little disappointed that there were only 2 kinds of enemies. As much fun as it is to judo-fling the little ones into a wall and watch them splat, or to squeeze myself between the ceiling and a big one and then apply a little pressure... I would have liked to see more variety. Perhaps some sort of air-borne enemy, or one that could climb walls?

The bosses were also somewhat disappointing, definitely less challenging than the normal levels. That's not to say that I didn't lose a few lives fighting them, but beating them was too simple, usually just one action. And, there were three bosses that basically just spat out little enemies at you until you squashed them! I would like to see bosses that:

A) are very different from the normal enemies;
B) require skillfully manipulating the environment to defeat (for example, swing a block on a chain into a wall to break it and release a boulder that would break a hole through the floor, instead of just breaking a rope to drop a block down and break a hole through the floor); and
C) have several different attacks that they would use depending on where you were (maybe they would jump up and pound the ground to try to shake you loose from the ceiling, or toss a rock up at you, instead of just waiting directly beneath you for you to come down on your own; you could use this against them somehow, perhaps making them pound the ground on a weak spot so they would fall down into lava, or use the boulder to hold down a switch).

All that said, Gish has perhaps the most interesting and versatile,  yet largely impotent hero of any game I've seen!

Does it count as a secret in the count at the end of the level? I think I've only one of those left to find in the Sewers, but I've not yet found a secret level.

I also found what looks like a Bridge Construction Set box on one of the Rapture levels. Does it do anything, or do you just look at it?

I completed it in about 4-5 hours.
Got 4 warp zones now, Pitfall is fun!
level skip is F and R where it shows you what level you are going to be doing, and you click on start.
The new patch has broken the F, which is back a level tho  :(

yeah i completely agree with you !
i was thinking exactly the same thing about the lack of variety of ennemies and the disappointing bosses!
but the problem is that AI is very complicated to program and u can see through the game that most ennemies will usually run toward you ( the big ennemies even kill themselves while only walking when the roof is too low)
but it would be fun to have bosses that u ll had to defeat by throwing rock on it. its always fun to have gish squeeze then jump to throw rocks at max speed ^^
long range ennemies could be interesting too.
but i doubt all those things will be added someday.

Phew. Finally beat the game. Those hell levels are a bitch-and-a-half. Took me about 5-6 days total, playing on and off.

A level editor has me absolutely panting in anticipation, though. You could do *so* much cool stuff with this game it's not even funny.

I bought it a few days ago, and immediately started playing it. After, I think, about 3-4 hours playing I got the good ending. That amount of time includes a huge mistake at the last level...

I could get her into the pit fairly easily (switch at the right, luring her into the closed pit (if you do it very careful she can get stuck), switch again), but I didn't notice the button at the top left. I was trying different timing etc, because I thought it was the only way. But now it really begins... I finally noticed the button at the top left, but I accidently pulled it out of the ground a bit, after which it didn't act like a button (and I couldn't see what happened with the pit)... I thought I needed to do something with that, so I tried to get the whole thing out of it for minutes. Once I got the button out of it (!) it was floating in the air, only able to move horizontally (it's pulled to a specific Y location with lots of force). I started trying messing with the switch again, but combined with the floating button. Something actually happened with the pit, but I didn't know exactly why (when interacting with it it waves up and down a lot, so it's hard to figure out). After trying various other things I finally found that moving it below the position it's pulled to opens the pit, so I tried to get that super-slippery thing (no single wall is even 1/4 times as slippery) that is pulled with lots of force to that Y location below the bar (so it can't move up again). After lots of tries I got it below the bar, but it was rotated too much, so it moved out of that position! After getting the same result a few times I finally managed to get it at the right position, and the pit remained open! I could finally end the game...

I can't really explain what's so difficult about it, so try for yourself. ;-)

I accidently did it again. Some screenshots:

Just floating there (pulled to that Y location), and very slippery.

The only way to permanently open the pit.

Finally beat the game.

Have you also found all of the Warp Zones?
(3 Classic-Games and 2 Devil Islands)

I've played the game through two times now,
second with finding every secret and two Warp Zones,
but it seems like I'm not getting anything in reward. :(

Any ideas or helping hints?

Finally beat Gish. Whew! The 7 planes were a major pain!
Rapture was just kind of annoying, interesting though. The
end surprised me.

-=-Spoiler:-=-
Too short. I was sitting there: "What's after rapture?!" Then
it ended. How annoying.

It needs a level editor. Right now the game is just worth the
money. With the editor, it would be worth much more.

Once the editor is there, if there is a campaign maker, then
the game will have much more value, maybe the community
could make an expansion together.

I finally managed to beat the game without killing Hera! I tossed a block up to press down the switch (Hera was at the lower level, not above the lava pit), went down with Hera, and when she tried to run me over I used heavy/hard mode to bounce her up onto the right side of the second level, and then hurried over to the right to get Brea. Hera tried to follow me, but just ran into the right wall on the second level. I caught Brea and took her to safety, with Hera still up on the second level safe and sound!

Unfortunately, there is no special ending for both Hera and Brea surviving, as I had previously thought  :(  It still gave me the same old "some say you can hear her screams from the depths..." blurb. Rather disappointing. I was hoping for something like "Gish knocked talked some sense into that crazy ho, Hera, and she stopped bothering Gish and Brea, who lived happily ever after."

Maybe in the next version...?

Unfortunately not. I can't even find both secrets on 1-1. I've got one Warp Zone, and both endings. That's about it.

beat gish 3 days after days after i bought it.(did not played all the time of course, spent quite some time making a fan art for gish that i sent to the site but i did not got any answer :(  ).
7 planes is the hardest part of the game. and i was disapointed that hera was the last boss, i thought there was gonna be something somewhat bigger... and i already knew hera from the versus mode, so i had no surprise.
great game anyway, really needs the editor (i know it has been said hundreds of times :)   but it would add a lot !)
still, there are some bugs with collisions, died a lot when just jumping on small surfaces, or did not took any damages while run over by giant rocks while in heavy form.
excellent work anyway!

now that i've beat it once,
how does "replay" work once the player info has turned yellow?

it asks for a filename....huh?

It took me a couple days. The hell levels were the hardest, I'd say. Fun game but disappointingly short.

In its current state I would say it isn't worth the money. If there were a level editor -- official Chronic-Logic or not -- it would really increase the game's value.

You lose you energy when some part of Gish is too flat. And you get very stretched (=flat) when you jump on a small surface...

or did not took any damages while run over by giant rocks while in heavy form.
That's what heavy is meant for. 4-7 proves that. Try 3-7 if you want to test the limits. :)
(btw, I know you can do some really strange things while being heavy, including tarball mating)

The replays are written to gish/replay/username-levelnumber.gre. In Gish you only need to type something like Jonathan-10. You have to figure out which number is for which level yourself...
Title: Who has beat Gish?
Post by: blob on July 16, 2004, 02:05:31 PM
i still think its strange sometimes, got killed once while just sliding down the wall in the "U" thing (in level 5-3 i think)
i dont think we r meant to be invincibible when heavy,or it would not have much interest to have a big rock pursuing you...
i can lose 50 hp when falling not too fast on a corner while a monster will deal about 10 damage  :I
ok i stop criticizing here, the physical motor of this game is amazing.

Uhhh... I beat it this morning.  I bought it on saturday, and I've been playing it a lot since, since I've been sick and haven't had much else to do.  The final boss took me a long time, until I eventually figured out you could get her stuck over the pit and open it without flinging the boxes up top.  (which is probably a bug...  :) )

I just beat it. The ending wasn't what I expected... left me wondering (it's a good sign).

I bought Gish nine days ago and have played it on and off since. This got to be the best platform innovation ever. Umm...right after Bubble Bobble. Although the replay value is high, the level editor would bring lots more to play. I've already got megalomanic plans in my mind for couple of levels...

Whoo... I beat Gish after probably a good 5 hours (mostly on the church levels -_- ) It was fun! Now I'm having fun playing with the vs mode! When/if the level editor comes out, that'll really be the main focus of the game for me ^^ Hopefully you can not only make 1 player levels, but also vs mode levels!

I have not beaten it yet (i've only played the demo), but I wanted to make this post anyway

I first started playing Bridge builder a while ago, and then Pontifex came out and ate my time. I never bought Tryptech (or whatever) because, although the demo was fun, I didn't enjoy it as much as the bridge building games.

I got the feeling that the community was dying out and I stopped visiting these boards and the CL website, so I missed the launch of Pontifex II (which I will buy soon), until Penny-Arcade mentioned you guys.  Gish looks like an awesome game.  Amazing fun.  I will have to buy it soon.  And I come to these boards and see the developers joking around with the players . .  Its great.  Chronic Logic, you guys rock.  Best of luck.
