Title: Bridge replicas
Post by: on December 13, 2001, 06:50:05 AM
after reading this thread, I attempted to make a replica of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Its the bridge that had the fire works all over it in the opening of the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

I had all the greatest of intentions, I carefully sculpted the landscape, I then spent ages building its complex design (working from photos).

The resulting bridge fell to the seabed like a sack of spuds!  I lightened it up a bit and re-inforced it but it still broke 60 links and only JUST supported a single carriage.

I won't bother posting it, however, if anyone else wants to take a shot at this one, feel free...

As an exercise in level design, I attempted to build a level to replicate the Firth of Forth crossing. Here's a somewhat weak attempt to build a replica. Anyone else try to make replica bridges ?

Ataturk Bridge in Istanbul, which spans the Bosphorus. (http://www.tjhsst.edu/~jbowman/ataturk.gif)

Well, as you can see, it's got a lot of extra cabling that isn't in the real bridge to provide enough strength at the initial moment of bridge flop.

I made the Sears Tower, and unlike some towers, it stands up quite nicely in Pontifex.

Be sure to set Difficulty to Medium, and run a 1 car train after the bridge is fully raised.

Sear's tower is more like 9 buildings held together.  There are 8 of varying height, surounding the core, or heighest part.

I  am glad that people tried to recreate bridges in pontifex.

did the model of the atturk bridge run into any problemns due to the lack of pretensioned cables?
