Title: Robots!
Post by: Connor on April 13, 2007, 10:51:07 PM
Robot: (in Gish) A machine w/ moving parts that is not anchored and moves around.

These are really fun to make. They might even work for small "boss" levels!
I made one that jumps, with a long peice on top and three small cubes below. The cubes extend and launch it. You can use it as an obstacle or a way to get up higher.
Then there's "The Hinge". It is simply two long blocks with a circle in between like a a joint. There is a piston atached at either end, so that it opens and closes and jumps around like crazy. A good obstacle.

If you have a problem with timing, (particularly with the jumper) just make a button in a slot with a block above that moves up and down and pushes the button every 1 or 2 seconds. Then link the bot to the button. Viola!

If you have any ideas, post 'em here! :)

I wouldn't call them robots; robots need some sort of intelligence. And that's exactly where it becomes less interesting for me. It may be possible to build some sort of computer, but I don't think it will be much more practical than one built from dominoes.

Yeah, good point. Let's call them custom enemies. Anyways, I made one that's in 3 peices and the peices on either side swing up and down. It leaps around all over and makes a GREAT boss!

One more point: does it die? I'm afraid that'll prevent most custom bosses from being playable. :(

You could make a break limit right, or make it so you need to lead the the robot into a pit or somethin.

Only tiles are breakable, and tiles don't make for a good boss. At most you can try a somewhat collapsible structure and declare the boss defeated once it has collapsed (even if nothing really happens).

I'm not sure how you would lure an unintelligent creature anywhere. I think pushing/pulling it is unreasonable.
