Next Version Ideas / Earthquakes
October 20, 2001, 08:39:50 AM
Another problem is that a quake actually knocks the train over once in a while.  Interesting idea though.

Well, you already got a screenshot, but I did it by swinging the bridge into place.  Cost like 11k.  Don't have any screenshots, but basically start building the floor a block or two over the water in a rampish shape and attach cables from the further parts of the ramp to the hook so it swings down.

It costs a lot of money, but you can do it by putting a LOT of heavy steel supports on the bottom to drag the bridge down and then hold it up.  Having it drop on its own will break the cables.

General Discussion / Contest Bridge?

ARRG! THE HORROR!

I just threw together a contest bridge in 5 minutes for kicks, it actually held, and it cut off a huge amount from the bridge I submitted.  The winning bridge had BETTER be cheaper or I'm gonna smack myself.

Who here built one?  I had to spend like an hour and a half and try tons of different designs before it would finally hold at hard.  Heh, everything stresses to the max when the train goes over and ONE broken link (manually broken) makes the whole thing collapse http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

I hope the top 5 bridges are posted for viewing, not just the winner.

Um... ChronicLogic specifically asked for people not to post what their cost was...

On a totally different subject: I started the longest thread, yay!

Yeah, I probably have no chance of winning, but I just want to see what other people came up with and how they cut the costs.  Since I submitted my bridge I've cut about 20k off the cost, but oh well.

Heh heh... no possible way a bridge for the contest could be less than 6 digits.  I never saw the number, but it doesn't really matter since I already submitted my bridge.

Working on a bridge for hours to reduce the cost by a few thousand dollars is kinda a pain, plus everybody builds bridges differently and you could be on the wrong track when revising your bridge.

General Discussion / Strategies on beginning a level
October 17, 2001, 03:44:26 AM
AHHHH... I'm stuck on the same level, heh.

I tend to lay the floor first thing, test it for kicks, then I slowly add supports and see what snaps first.

I could just be kinda dumb, but how exactly do you build off the structures that are further back from the main bridge?  Actually, I understnad how to build off them, I just dont' understand how I would link those to my bridge to support it.  Anyway, because of this I'm stuck on complex lev 10 or something.

Oh wait, nevermind... made a really small change and it makes it to the top, although very very very very slowly.  New question: anybody have a bridge that helps the train get up faster? =P

10 to 16 in 30 minutes... yawn

I'm stumped.  I can make a bridge that holds but the train stalls and stops just short of the top (halfway up the last platform).  How did other people do this?
