Miscellaneous / Old-fashioned hardware
October 31, 2001, 02:47:36 PM
I have an old 486DX 33MHz PC with 16MB of RAM and a SB16 which for some reason cannot support high DMA without windows running.  If anyone has knowledge of old hardware, I would appreciate any thoughts as how to rectify this problem.  I would like to be able to support 16 bit digitized sound so I can run M.E.S.S.

Next Version Ideas / Woooooah there 'lil doggie

I like to drop the hav from extremely high altitudes on my bridges to see how resilient they are to stress, and it seems to me that the speed of the hav is capped.  http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('>

Any thoughts?  If it is indeed capped, it should be uncapped, at least for freefall anyway.

I commited an eror in my previous post because the score I referred to did not relate to a TNT2. I only have TNT2 scores for a P233 and K6-2/350 at this time, and the bench that is "constant" with the geforce2go is closely CPU-bound on these TNT2 scores, at these machine levels. This affirms Entroper's guess, but I'd like to have the 800Mhz TNT2 score for a more accurate analysis.

Problems / OH NO!  Where'd my bridge go!?
October 24, 2001, 03:57:06 AM
I was putzing around in a custom level where I was attempting to make an extremely large suspension bridge, which due to the limitations of cable required that I have lots of the stuff, so of course, I had very large towers and a reinforced roadway and all the fixin's.

I god-moded the bridge to smithereenes, and only registered about 8000 broken links, but I venture to guess that there were a great deal more.

At any rate, after adding a couple more pieces of cable, I went back into test mode, and my level appeared to have only a couple cables dangling in midair!

I can only guess that whatever data structure was keeping track of my links got filled up and cycled back round.  Deleting the links that I could see in the editor and then going back into test mode made my whole bridge reappear.

Hmmm....

In case you think this is my fault, keep in mind that I have 256 MB of RAM and a 1.5 GB pagefile.  I don't think I'm running out of memory.  http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

General Discussion / Extreme Calm
November 03, 2001, 06:45:21 PM
Hrm, not exactly the kind of conversation I was hoping to start.  You know Andy, you don't have to post a lot to prove that you are r33t.  In fact, when you post a lot, you're more likely to say something really stupid, or worse, get flamed.  I have started a new thread with a more descriptive topic where hopefully people will talk about their ideas for the next contest, and not about how they like to post a lot to inflate their title.  My apologies.

General Discussion / Next Contest Ideas!!!!!!!!
November 03, 2001, 07:03:37 PM
Personally, I would like to see a longer span for the next contest; something akin to the spans in the original bridge builder, though perhaps not quite as long, as I don't know if it is possible to cross such a lengthy span given the new physics.  I have a suspicion that a span any longer than the one for the first contest cannot be crossed by the monkey-bridge concept, or by the low arched roadway, and would thus provide room for more creativity.
