Next Version Ideas / Music
October 18, 2001, 05:14:41 PM
I'd like to see some really subtle background music... some creatively inspiring music. I realize that CL probably doesn't have any musicians onboard (yet), and they probably don't want to license someone else's tunes, but it'd be nice to see.

I realize that I can play my own MP3s or whatever in the background, but I don't think that listening to stuff like rock or hip-hop really helps to get the creativity flowing http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Call me crazy, but I'd actually like to see some mediocre, SUBTLE music in there!

Next Version Ideas / some Eyecandy...

Ummm... Texturing the bridges is a BIG no-no. Sky? Sure.

But if you toss a texture onto the bridge, that means that you're texturing thousands of polygons. Think about it... each SECTION of bridge has how many individual steel beams? It'd take a LOT of processing power to do something like that, and P-flex runs slow enough on the big levels as is.

Having said that, a simple texture on the sky couldn't hurt http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Next Version Ideas / No more asymmetric anchors!
October 18, 2001, 05:22:12 PM
Am I alone in hating the levels with asymmetric anchors? I don't so much mind the ones with anchors only on one side of the water. It's the ones with only one anchor placed on either side of the track that really piss me off.
On those bridges, I generally just make a bridge that can support the train on 'easy', regardless if its clean or not, then move on.

With the current system of complex/3D building, it's NOT FUN to try to balance out the load of the bridge from side to side.

Specifically, the levels that really agitate me are:
Complex 5
Map pack 4, 6, and 9 (!).

Oops... Every post I've made on this forum has been made with me thinking that I was making suggestions for the sequel to P-flex (ie. like the step from BBuilder to P-flex). I'm starting to think that maybe this is just for the next VERSION of P-flex (ie. 10.x.x)

Which is it?

Next Version Ideas / FULL 3D building
October 14, 2001, 01:11:08 PM
I think that the next logical step is to integrage full 3D bridge building.

It would be fun to have curving bridges. Makes me think of connecting an island chain or something by bridges, going from one island, turning, connecting to another...

Problems / Physics bugs
October 18, 2001, 04:27:23 PM
The problem isn't that the CABLE breaks, it's that whatever is on the end of the cable breaks. ASCII art time!

in the above example, the two beams on the sides of the triangle will stay attached, but the bottom will just bust right off. This is ordinarily the strongest shape in the game, but it does not stay together when it is suspended off of a large cable.

It's not really something that you will run into while playing the game, but it's a bug nonetheless

Problems / Physics bugs

A couple of bugs in the physics engine...

1) If a box has every possible vertex connected, then it self-destructs.

2) If you hang an object from a long cable, then it seems to have a LOT of force exerted on it for no reason. Try building a large tower, then hanging a cable with something on the end of it. Usually the object on the end of the cable will break.

Here are my scores that beat the ones already posted...

4. 26788
6. 36734
9. 72868
(why am I so far ahead with this one? it's not special)
12. 86144
14. 57864
15. 102912

ouch...! you guys killed me on 16. My best on it so far is 177824. I'd like to see your bridges for that one!

of course these bridges all have 0 busted links on hard.

--edit--

Okay, I see why I did so badly on 16... that's where I decided to try my hand at arch building. Let's see what I can do from scratch.

I've got 29548 for 6 as well... I'm fairly certain it's unbeatable.

I drew a crappy ASCII diagram... it's really simple.

I did this one no problem...
just your standard triangle bridge, raised one level to avoid the water.

General Discussion / Hmmm, favorite bridge
October 18, 2001, 03:48:08 PM
One thing to remember with cables is that the longer they are, the stronger they are. Same goes for steel, actually.

That's one reason why it's good to drop your suspension bridges down a level or two instead of keeping them straight and level.

I've tried building arches but they never work. I can never get the angles right. I DID do a huge triangular arch for level 16, but I guess if it's triangular it's not really an arch...
