New Game Ideas / How about "Skyscraper Builder"
October 12, 2001, 09:34:07 PM
That's a really cool idea, i'd love to play it!!

Imagine being given different kinds of foundations, something strange like a two booted buiding, like an arch, or stadium domes, and towers like the CN tower in Toronto. And i assume it wouldn't be too hard to adapt the Pontifex engine to a game like that, the same basic principles of metal links would apply.
Or make the game so general that you can even build a space shuttle launch pad and see if it can stand launch stresses http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

And the demolition idea is even better! I'd be cool to have buildings around the one being destroyed that can only take a certain amount of damage (like the links in Pontifex), so you have to be careful how you set up the explosion.

New Game Ideas / How about "Skyscraper Builder"

But that's the cool thing, given the freedon to build any way you want, you could make any kind of structure you want, an inverted pear shaped thing, a pyramid, a couple of buildings interconnected at the top, all the stuff you'd never see built in real life. Taking it to the extreme, you could build stuff like flying cities like in Star Wars, given a few floating anchors, Pontifex Style, or maybe stuff like Venice, where there are bridges all over the place and the houses sit on anchors that are at the bottom of the water.

i think the idea has huge potential. but it would have to be a bit better looking than Pontifex, no offence ChronicLogic http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Some nice detailed 3d Landscapes, 3d water with waves and reflections, and all kinds of textures for the building, like glass, metal, granite, marble.. stuff a GeForce 3 could take advantage of, you get the idea. All of these optional of course, for crappy computers.

I would love to go nuts on a large landscape with rivers, etc, and build a whole city, from skyscrapers, to bridges, to classic buildings, or greek temples, baroque cathedrals.. wow, imagine being given the island in Paris with the Notre Dame, and being able to build it, and all the bridges that connect the island to the city

Arrrggg, i really wanna play it now http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Next Version Ideas / I want a new version

Is a new version close to being released?
What features are you working on incorporating, or will it be just bugfixes and more maps?

Next Version Ideas / Pre-tensioning Cables

It would definitely make things a LOT easier in some situations, but i'd definitely like the feature.
Some present levels would be made easy, but new levels could reflect the change.

Problems / Interface question
October 15, 2001, 06:50:55 AM
it's "f"

i don't know if it's in the manual or not, but i was going to post the same question but i tried a few things before, just because it made sense to be a key next to "r" for forward

Problems / No structures from beside the Bridge
October 14, 2001, 09:05:19 PM
I made a A shaped structure, starting from the two anchors in the water, tilted towards the deck, so that the top of it comes right above the center of the deck, then anchored it with cables from the single far anchor in the water. Dropped cables from the top of the A and made a single height A support at each end of the bridge. Holds fine.. I don't have hosting for a screenshot, but if anyone wants, i'll email them the bridge file and you're more than welcome to post a screenshot of it.
my address is alcorrr@icqmail.com

Chillum, either you're inhuman, or i really suck http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> or you have some secret ninja techique for level 3 .. i've been trying for a few hours to get it under your 79554$, and i'm starting to get the impression the bridge is mocking me.. or it might just be the lack of sleep..   aaanyway, you also inspired me to redo my level 2 to beat your score, and that one did work out.. anyway, here are my updated scores:

1:   57540
2:   41959
3:   88106
4:   28500
5:   47848
6:   24076
7:   162814
8:   36670
9:   106212
10: 80030
11: 122490
12: 70194
13: 41596
14: 69600
15: 215464
16: 307912

I've redone most of my other ones to beat yours, Gray http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

all except 8 (i don't know how you could use the solution from 6), and i didn't even bother redoing 11, it's too ugly to concentrate on right now.

As a side note, i'm getting cable this wednesday morning, so i'll put up a page with screenshots and bridge files in a few days, and i'll probably host other people's bridges too, if they need space.

Now show me yours http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

I also have a suggestion for ChronicLogic:
Would it be possible to give us a little space on this server where we could upload bridges to show other people, or maps, a screenshot, etc? I think something as small as 100k would be more than enough.
Hope you'll consider it http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>
