General Discussion / Strategies on beginning a level
October 16, 2001, 02:41:06 PM
Okay, maybe it's a weird question: do any of you use specific tactics for beginning a (large) level? For instance, suppose there is one anchor point on the river bed and two more on the "beginning" and "end" of the ravine. Typical strategies would be: build a supporting truss structure from the bottom up that supports the entire bridge, or build one large tower with cables hanging from it, or whatever? As editing a large bridge can take some time, it's often very handy if you lay out a bridge concept first, and work from there in refining it. Oh well, this is probably all pretty obvious http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

General Discussion / Building Golden Gate style Bridges

Heh, I used a similar tactic too on some levels: First build the hanging cable w/ no cables hanging down from it. Then test the "bridge" and see if the hanging cable keeps its shape. If not, adjust its shape so it best fits the "equilibrium" position (You often need HD grid for this), and then hang cables from the main one to attach the deck to. It works very well, if your main bridgeposts are sturdy enough.

That'd be nice. We'll need a new level, get it posted on CL's site and then give everyone a week or so to 'solve' it in several ways:

- Cheapest bridge (and overall winner)
- Most beautiful bridge
- 'Dirtiest' bridge (you know, like collapsing just one second after the train finishes its last pass)
-Strongest bridge? Test it by running it with the heaviest possible train on hard... or by quake mode http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>
