Gish Editor / Tutorials are nice
September 15, 2006, 12:56:34 PM
Are you sure you spelled it correctly? Also, if Gish is stored on a case-sensitive file system you must use the right case (you should anyway). My machine that's capable of running Gish (and the only one holding it) broke, so I can't check anything myself.

Gish Editor / My ideal view of Gish+editor

As far as I know the level format isn't officially released, but it's definitely http://pontifex2.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=31;t=731" target="_blank">not unknown.

From what I know there were no plans to have no scripting. It's just that it was more work that simply wasn't done for that reason. Also, lately I'm not so fond of Java anymore, but it's still nice cross-platform and security-wise.

My whole idea was to get around hardcoded restrictions. We now have basic cyclic pistons that can be activated by a few actions, and that's it. No, wait, there are also lights that can flicker in a predetermined way.

My general-purpose 'strategy' is simply to crush everything. If that doesn't work more is involved.

Gish Editor / Little Questions
August 29, 2006, 09:58:54 PM
Quote (Sword King 22 @ Aug. 29 2006,5:51)
What do the different types of pistons do?

The phase of each is different.
5: Smallest.
6: Halfway toward largest.
7: Largest.
8: Halfway toward smallest.
How do I make a switch activated door?
Select the part of the door that moves it, then click on the switch while holding K.
How do I make a rotating wheel?
Add an anchor a few blocks away from a wheel. Connect a 5 piston from the anchor to the closest point on the wheel (very important not to do it the other way around; the "from" object's color will be used for attributes). Connect a 7 piston to the farthest point. Connect one of 6 and 8 to what's left. Which piston you connect to which connector defines the way the wheel will rotate (clockwise or counterclockwise). The anchor should be set to this color:
Red: diameter of wheel.
Green: desired speed in seconds per revolution.
Blue: desired number of revolutions.
How do I make a repeating piston?  http://pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>
If you mean a piston that never stops, set blue to 0, which is seen as unlimited.

Actually it can build just fine on a PPC Mac. Testing is the problem.

Fun. Now I know what it looks like.

I've always thought that the physics (as well as them playing a major role in interaction) don't lend themselves to internet play.

Gish Editor / mac editor bug
June 28, 2006, 06:59:38 AM
gisheditor.txt:
F7= Load level

F9= Save current level
A file name must be placed in the level name field to save your level with the        extension .lvl

Keep in mind that I think it's F9 that causes the problem.

Gish Editor / White tiles in editor
June 25, 2006, 09:56:05 PM
It's normal. A tile's look is undefined when it doesn't have a texture. Such a tile is probably unused, and you can just give it a texture if you want to use it.

Gish Editor / Vehicles!

It's not entirely clear to me what you mean, but let me try anyway. Did you reset the level after creating the vehicle (F5)? All dynamic things need a reset after you modify them.

Gish Editor / Having Problems

Blocks: set a tile with Q and Z.
Platforms/objects: set a texture with [ and ] when it's selected.
Generator: one of the few things i haven't tried. And the only thing not explained in the docs.

In the current version you can select Custom Levels -> Load Level -> x, where x is one of the original story levels.

If you're interested in the screenshot: occasionally I remove old stuff from my small space (and I mean as in storage) on the web. I think it has been long gone from my local storage too.

Gish Editor / Can't save levels!
May 25, 2006, 03:09:24 AM
I don't know the cause, but I do have a fix (at least it works for me): save and load the level (that is, simply press F9 and then F7 when you see the mess).

Gish Editor / Can't save levels!
May 23, 2006, 10:33:27 PM
Gish doesn't use a conventional user interface. If you hit F9 and F9 isn't bound to something else (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/expose/" target="_blank">Exposé?), it'll try to save it, even though no dialog or anything else shows up. It should end up in the level folder inside your gish folder. You can check by looking for your level in the Finder, or loading another level and again your level (but that'll destroy your work if it couldn't save it for some reason). If you find that it doesn't save your level in the gish/level folder, make sure you can write to it (permissions).
