Next Version Ideas / I want a new version

Man, already itching for a new version? How often would you like them? http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Like cable cheap or like cable strong for one type of force. I think that it would have to be pretty expensive, well not tooo expensive... anyway, it couldn't be as cheap as cable, but i dont think that's what you meant.

It would have to be MIDI music. part of the appeal of this game is its size. An mp3 would double if not more the size of the game. However, I also think some music might be nice, IF there was an option to switch it off.

The Sims is a good example of how to effectively use music to influence creativity. The piano solos that play while you are designing your house ad just the right background noise to an otherwise quiet task.

Next Version Ideas / Pre-tensioning Cables

I don't think this would be too hard to make happen (speaking with little expertise) but it would add so much to the realism of the game. Of a list of five things I would like in a new version, this would be toward the top for me.

This would also allow for some bridges with cables supporting more cables which could look really cool. http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

Next Version Ideas / Pre-tensioning Cables
October 16, 2001, 01:52:59 AM
Would there be any way to pre-tension the cables so the bridge wouldn't flop around and get damaged when you test it? I know this was talked about in the bridge contructor forum, somebody suggested a slider that allows you to choose a tension. I don't know how easy it would be to impliment, or what the ramifications of such an implimentation would be. Flopping cables kind of get annoying. Real bridges almost always have pre-tensioned cables which allows them to better support the weight of the bridge. Does anybody else feel similarly?

Wow! I really touched off a powder keg! I don't see how the ability to ease into gravity can be compared to pre-stressing cables. No matter how sloooow gravity comes on, unless you can pre-tension cables, suspension bridges will never work as well as they should.

Anything would be nice, but its my desire to build golden-gate-style bridges. This cannot be done very well w/out a method to pre-stress cables. brett talked about another method: Have a new material - High tension cable, but I don't agree it should cost three times as much, that seems a little excessive.

The ability to flip the level really would come in handy on some of my "uglier" bridges. BTW, nice job responding to user requests, I can remeber most of the additions to the current version being suggested earlier in forums. http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

My answer wasn't ever intended to be "smart-ass" as you put it. I'm sorry if it came off that way.

Why don't you disable it yourself? A screen saver isn't that important to have come on after 1 or even 15 minutes. If Plamsa Burn worries you that much, just turn off your monitor whenever you leave the room. That way, your programs will still run, even though you can't see them. http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Next Version Ideas / We need ships !
October 18, 2001, 05:58:42 AM
There's a lot to this idea of having objects (ships, trucks, etc.) pass under the bridge. I'm sure one thing bridge designers have to think of is height minimums. My relatives are sailing from chicago to the gulf of mexico right now, and they have to pay attention to bridge heights, as thier mast is 55 feet high. I'm sure the designers of the many bridges along thier route had to think about who would come through their bridge later.
The idea to have them be lift and/or draw bridges is even more interesting to me, but I bet that would be more dificult to impliment than a simple height requirement.

Next Version Ideas / Complex mode tutorial

What if the message was displayed in the description section of the level information. It could be something simple like "In this level you will need to change the plane, press R an F to do so." If someone wants to make up a simple map pack, I'll write the tutorial.

Perhaps things reach terminal velocity quickly in the Pontifex world. http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> It may be that the speed of objects is limited in order to simplify the physics calculations, but I doubt it. Just one more physics bug which is not that damaging, but big enough to get noticed.
