I was experimenting with counterweights when I notices that some structures spontaneously break-up

excuse my ascii art...

suppose you have a 4x4 grid:

  ||||
-  ....
-
-
-  ....

if you make all the possible links between the dots and hit test, the whole thing blows up.

light or heavy steel, does not matter

That is really weird.  I just tried it and the same thing happened.

neurosys

I have also made really big structures and when they're big enough, the beams just disappear. And when I remove some of the beams the problem goes away. So it really seems, there's a limit in the engine (that should be removed right away http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>)

Dragon

I'm one who likes to make huge towers, and I use the same technique..

It just explodes.. Kinda cool though, but still..

Don't forget, in real life, load is distributed on bridges. If I am getting the idea of your ascii image, it seems that the bottom row is supporting 3 times it's own weight with compression going straight down.

If the top layer width is < bottom, weight becomes evenly distributed. Look at the Eiffel Tower for a better explanation of what I'm trying to say.

Hope I understood what you meant....sorry if I haven't.

Sorry panther, but I think it's not about physics at all, in the game, those structures EXPLODE - most beams just disappear (break) right after the first frame. Such structures are supposed to be very strong instead of blowing up, in real life... Well actually they can't exist anyway since all those beams go through each other. I guess there's some limit being reached in the engine, and because of that it makes the beams break right away.
