You know, you're given a budget, and you have to build a race car, and I'm not just talking put new parts in it. You have to build it from the ground up, frame and body and everything.

And it doesn't have to be just cars, it could be bicycles, or airplanes, or moon rovers, or tanks, or whatever.

Or better yet, maybe just give a task for the vehicle to do (i.e. pick up and carry an object from point A to point B within 2 minutes), and let the player make any kind of vehicle he wants, and then drive it himself to complete the objective.

There was a game like this that I played in a unit in my school, I have no idea what it was called. Very dull graphics and simple DOS interface, you would design your body shape and then add things like bumpers, headlights, engine. Then you would race it around a track and handling statistics would come back. It was actually pretty fun. That wouldn't be to far off from the concept of pontifex either, you could almost use the same engine!

I remember the game you are remembering. I never played it, but it looked fun. Man, that had to be at least 7 years ago! I agree that this idea has potential. Imaging building the car's body and frame from several different types of materials (Aluminut, steel, fiberglass, carbon fiber), then choosing an engine (4 cylinder all the way up to v12), transmission (auto or manual) and tires. Then go out and crash test it and performance test it. Kewl!

Got it! It was called Car Designer and was made by Optimum Resource inc. The Underdogs.org has it http://www.theunderdogs.org/game.php?name=Car+Builder" target='_blank'>http://www.theunderdogs.org/game.php?name=Car+Builder It was a lot of fun, think of how great this concept could be if updated! The more I think about it, the more excited I get.
