Hi.

I bought Gish at a local store two days ago and still haven't got it running on my machine. After starting the game it only shows a black screen with some grey rectangles. Looks like these are the menu items. After clicking on the grey "item" in the left top corner it put's me back to the desktop.

I also tried the update from your site, but that didn't help. Also the nosound and nomusic parameters didn't change anything.

Here are my system specs:
Athlon XP 2400+
Nvidia GeForce FX 5700
512 MB Ram

Ubuntu Edgy Eft
I'm using the nvidia drivers from the edgy repositories.

Many thanks for any help.

kind regards

Make sure you are running Gish from the terminal in X and that you are in the actual Gish folder when running it.  Also make sure X is in 24 or 32 bit color.

Doesn't look like that easy. I'm starting gish from the gnome-terminal and yes from within the directory i've extracted the tar.gz content from the disc. The desktop color depth is 24 bit. That's the only depth i've defined in the xorg.conf and it's also set as default depth.

If you installed a patch from chroniclogic.com you are going to need to uinstall the whole thing and re-install your original version.  Who is the publish of the version you purchased?

Publisher is Halycon Media. That's the box you can buy in germany and austria.

Have you tried installing the patch for the Halycon website:

Hi.

No chance. This update only includes a setup.exe file for the windows version of gish.

Have you tried to run Gish under Ubuntu Edgy Eft? I've now tested it on another machine but also with an nvidia card and there it puts me back to the desktop with changing back to correct screen resolution and dead mouse. I need to restart the x-server to get everything else working again.

Many thanks for your help.

I have not tested Gish under Ubuntu Edgy Eft, but it sounds like the game is running, its just not loading the images or text correctly.  Does the mouse seem to move normally and clicking on the boxes that are supposed to be a menu work normally, or does everything seem extremely slow?  What is the total size of your install?

Hi Josiah.

I always thought that i had tried this already. Don't know why, but when preloading the libalut library as described in your sticky thread here in this forum, it's working now.

Looks like it's time for some vacation again.  http://pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('>

Thanks for all your help.

[Edit]
By the way, have you ever thought of recompiling gish so that preloading the library isn't needed on newer distributions?

Yep. That's really a very cool game. Thank you very much for releasing it for linux.
