On a hunch, I downloaded the latest OpenAL libraries for Mandrake from the cooker (libopenal0-0.0.7-3mdk), and that seems to have fixed the problem. I haven't extensively tested, but at least the first level starts fine, with music, without crashing.

Has there been any resolution to this issue? I am also experiencing this music bug in linux.
