BCS General / Bug: Same bridge, different results!
November 13, 2002, 06:41:44 PM
Nope, I cant see the difference. Mind you, the good bridge fails at 25 seconds on my PC. Did you build them in a different order or just copy the file?

Simplest way is to use heavy steel and build a standard triangle braced arch bridge.
Ignore all anchor points except those closest to the water. make a flat deck. Then start to build an arch with heavy steel. First piece needs to be 8 across and 4 up, second piece 8 across and 1 up - go down the same way.
You will need to brace the arch at the centre - again use heavy steel so it goes 8 across and 4 up from the anchor point, then 8 across and 4 down to the middle.
Use cables to hold the other bits of decking.
good luck

Forgot to mention it but you will also need a cable support from the middle of the arch to the middle off the decking.

BCS General / Help! Pontifex wont load
October 28, 2002, 08:10:02 AM
I reinstalled my graphics drivers yesterday as I was getting IRQ errors in some games. When I tried to start Pontifex this morning I get the frame for a few seconds and then the program unloads. The stderr message is:

Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)

The driver is the same one I was using before and is the latest from LeadTek. I'm using XP and that is fully patched. Other games seem to work fine. The same thing happens if I try to load the "setup" program.

Has anybody got any suggestions before I get PWS (Pontifex Withdrawal Syndrome).

Yes - I agree the problem is graphic driver related. I tried 4 different ones - 2 from NVidea and 2 from Leadtek - eventually I got one that worked (the NVidea ones gave me a thunkconnect32 error). Leadtek don't seem to acknowledge OpenGL - perhaps they are owned by Microsoft.

BCS General / Asymmetry
October 10, 2002, 10:17:15 PM
I may be being stupid (again) but why do so many of my bridge designs work fine on the first pass (no broken links), but fail on the second pass (complete collapse). The bridges are symmetrical as far as I can tell. What am I missing?  The only difference appears to be the direction of travel.

BCS General / PFX 2 level designer?

Now that is the best suggestion I have heard all day. Sorry I can't help but if you find something - let me know.

BCS General / Easier?

Apart from hard lvl 1 - all bridges can be made at less than hallf of the budget allowed - even in hard mode, and excluding the complex solutions. Are we getting better or are chroniclogic playing safe?

That is the standard "management" view.
But I prefer realistic estimates with real risks of overruns. Missing a target is a sign of accurate estimation - as opposed to playing safe to satisfy arbitrary "Customer Service" criteria.

I'm sorry but I disagree. They want to start earning the money asap. If they don't release it - it's because of a #### good reason.

It is just pitiful - I am checking my email every 3 minutes at the moment.  I hope you guys have more self restraint.

Records and Hints / Longest single span?
October 01, 2002, 06:39:28 AM
It is possible that the question has been asked before, in which case my apologies.

Is there a maximum length of single span possible with unlimited funds and materials? Has anybody tried it or is it to big for the best PCs today?

Thanks
