Zatikon Discussion / Re: What exactly does one do...

Click surrender.

I've beaten that setup before(two changelings, sergeant, hydra, acolyte, strategist), but it wasn't worth the time.

BTW I have an idea for unbeatable A.I : summon only Heretics - and lots of them ;)

This happens every so often at high level AI.  You can beat that using an artificer, changlings/summoner, or priests with protection.

This unit is way OP, specially against high level mage units and low hp units.
When the A.I summons them I know my Channeler will be soon dead and I will lose the match.

Also a question about ranking, how do they work and why am I leveling so slow ?

I'm not sure about the precise ranking system, but have you repeatedly been playing against the same opponent?  After a few times beating them, you will stop gaining rank. (After a while, though, you can play them again and it will count).

Play(and beat) people of significantly higher rating, and yours will skyrocket.

5. There are only 1000 points.
A "good" unit can cost 350 points, this can leave you with about 3-4 units making "barracks" a must as the AI can deploy units all the time without restrictions and your 3-4 units won't cut it without the ability to create more units.
You are very limited in the amount of units you can have, and some units are almost mandatory.

I suggest making an option for 2000 games.

It's certainly true that it becomes increasingly difficult(if not impossible) to defeat the AI at high levels without certain units(you generally need a summoner and something with allows for swapping/converting their units), but I'm not sure that 2000 points would help in the long term-at some AI, that's probably going to be insufficient without certain units.  The only 'solution' would be a more intelligent(but unit limited) AI, but I imagine that's hard to program.

I suspect (didn't count) that if you play random against other player you both get more points as there are a lot more units then in a regular game.

You get 1000 + general/gate guard.

6. There is no way (that I know of) to pause the game, even on single player mode - if I have some urgent matter that I need to attend to - I might lose my turn.

Yeah, time-outs would be nice.

The Chieftain's flee canceling is a confusing ability, and I don't know that I can explain precisely how it's triggered off-hand(although I would know in-game), but I'll give it a shot:

You can never move vertically(oriented towards castle) in a direction that takes you away from the Chieftain;  I suspect this was not the part you were having trouble with.

If you are to the left of the row the Chieftain(row being vertical) is on, you cannot move further left; if you are to the right of the Chieftain's row, you cannot move further right.  As an example, a chieftain placed on the bottom right corner of the board would mean that your opponent could only move towards your castle, or to the right.

Canceling movement within one range would  mean that the ability would trigger on a unit attempting to move that STARTS movement within one range of the canceling unit(i.e., adjacent to the footman). So if I have a dragon next to the footman and I try to move it away, the footman will cancel the movement and I'm out of luck.

Early levels of the AI usually don't have 'crazy things' coming at you.  Did you play a coop game with a more experienced player?  I seem to recall that this, for some reason, raises the level of your single player AI.  Your AI goes down one level for every two consecutive losses, so you can throw a bunch of games if this is the case.

The game has a steep enough learning curve as it is;  I can't imagine complicating the inorganic categorization as being beneficial to the game.

Zatikon Discussion / Predict the Wyvern change!

My prediction is on it simply laying eggs that hatch less powerful units, but without the 'Fed' requirement.

If a bounty hunter has an enchanter marked, and the enchanter is given diplomatic immunity, the enchanter can stun the bounty hunter.  Is this intended?

i would love to see a classic mode (those super units are pounding every army combination i can come up with)

Sergeant
Hydra
Two changlings
Strategist.

Computer defeated.

There does need to be a cap on the AI's points, though; either over the course of the game or on the field at one time.  This would allow for a greater variation in single player setups.

At 200 something, I have a hard time envisioning beating the AI without changlings.  I might be able to use something other than the Hydra, but it would be much more difficult.

When I didn't have a Hydra and was in the 70s, I used shield maiden + healer + priest + some other units.

Yeah, a cap on AI points and movements would allow players to diversify their armies.

Units / Re: The Captain
December 29, 2009, 08:33:17 PM
At 150 construction points, the captain costs as much as the most directly comparable unit, the archer.  It has the same effective attack range(5), albeit at the cost of one extra command.  It is slightly more durable than the archer, but must move one space closer to its enemies.  It additionally has the ability(granted, a slightly difficult to use ability) to potentially save you a lot of commands.

No, the captain didn't blow me out of the water either-for 150 points, however, I'm glad it didn't.  I consider it a slightly better version of the archer.

Heh, I remember listening to Beethoven's 7th Symphony (which I was not very familiar with) not long ago and then suddenly sitting bolt upright and saying, "This is Zatikon's music!"

I was listening to the 7th while doing homework, and began wondering why it was taking so long to find a random match.

Yeah, it needs to be brought down a notch.

Shoot, your right Lunaria.  Kran is much better suited to be the Unit(strategy) guy and me the experienced.  We can still switch.  Here is the blog..hopefully I dont get punished for posting the link:

I was also intending do 'units', but I suppose we'll work out who's doing what.  Kran knows his Zatikon, but English is not his strong suit, so he probably wouldn't be the best choice for a blogger.   Since I can't edit your post, I had something you might upload in regards to the tactician.  Personally, I always thought Lunaraia's strength would be suggesting setups.

Tacticians, like all command units, fit nicely into the adage that 'you don't know what you have until it's gone'.  Losing a command unit isn't a killing blow like losing a 550 point dragon would be, but it can be a pretty brutal hamstring.  You may not need that extra command every turn, but I can't count the number of times one command has made the difference between a failed assault or defensive maneuver and a successful one.

Typically, try and deploy tacticians as early as possible-you do frequently need to get attack units out to defend your castle early on, but tacticians should be pretty high up in your deployment order.

And here's an addition I currently would make to the general:

One of the most common mistakes I see new players make is not playing the general(and other reduced deployment units first) first;  in almost any game, it should be the first unit you deploy.  There are some exceptions; for example, if you draw a dragon(which costs all of your starting commands to deploy) you may want to play the dragon immediately because your success may depend on aggressively charging your opponent's base before they implement significant defensive measures.

sorry for not being specific enough, NOT EMAIL ADVERTISING.  Email banner advertising!  Which, please ring in, must be one of the all-time best spots for advertising next to google.com banner advertising for trigger words.  But, this is only my speculations. I dont have data to back anything up.  Gaming conventions would seem to be the best bet if someone wanted to put together CD's and print material.  I can even make all the graphics pro bono if you guys are interested.

I believe I understood you the first time.  If it's an ad showing to a user when they are accessing mail, the average rate of return is zero(with some margin of error)
